Depends on if you're talking about a tournament or cash game.

In tourneys, there is no 'sitting out'. Missing players are dealt in with cards going directly to the muck. If they are blinds, they still pay the blinds, and ante if any. No other penalty and they can play when they return.

In cash games house rules vary, but usually if you sit out and miss your blinds, you'll be required to post when you return or wait until you will be big blind again.

Sit out too long and your chips will be bagged and you'll lose that seat.

Hello there,

I am just writing here to ask a few questions please regarding blinds when using the dead button rule in no limit Hold'em cash games.

1.  What happens if a player who leaves the table to sit out for a few hands is going to be the big blind? Does the next player left of him/her be the Big blind instead? Does the button and Small blind stay where they are?

2. What happens if the small blind elects to sit out a few hands? My understanding is they can post a dead small blind as soon as the button passes but can they wait to post it on the small blind again without having to post the big blind?

3. If a player sits out and it's determined that they are between the dealer button and small blind, does the player left of them post the small blind and the player left of that player post the big blind as normal?

4. In relation to question 3, would the button then go to the player who is sitting out? I want to say no because that would mean the same players would post the same blinds again but following the dead button rule, it never skips right?

Sounds like this is a frequent problem. As such, it could be an angle shoot attempt for free chips.

I.E. Deliberately making a vague raise, then rake in unearned chips from players that undercall and fold.

Therefore, penalty for player A and player D has the option to fold and get the called chips back.

This happens in a home game, blinds are 400/800 first to act is player A. Player A raises to 2400 total but player A fails to push out chips, It is only a verbal raise. Player B and C fold; Player D says call and puts out 800. So the problem that I am having is that Players lately fail to put out there chips. In this situation I give player A warning that he must put his chips out to let everyone know. In cases like this I give Player D the option to call the 2400 or to fold and surrender the 800. So with this situation it is laziness and Player B failed to hear the verbal. I took some flak for this, I felt it was a fair ruling. Can you give me some feed back on this. Also what would happen in the casino with Player A not pushing out his chips?
