Chips of leaving, late & absent players
« on: February 28, 2011, 08:04:16 AM »
Hello,

About this difficult subject is there a "most common rule" for the moment (before finding one day a definitive rule) in those different cases:

1- Player leaving and declaring he will not come back: what about his chips? (imagine big stack must leave for familly problems: different TD opinions)
2- Player registered (allready paid) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)
3- Player registered (still have to pay) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)
4- Player registered (freeroll sponsorded tourney) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

TY

I am not sure how common they are, but here are my answers:

1: I remove the chips
2: The chips stay in play. The player can arrive whenever he likes. Blinds and Antes are taken.
3: I will leave the chips until no more registrations are allowed (usually the first 90 minutes in my tournaments) then I take them away
4: Same as No 3

1- Player leaving and declaring he will not come back: what about his chips? (imagine big stack must leave for familly problems: different TD opinions)
We used to remove chips in cases where a player will not be returning. I think the reason why they are leaving is irrelevant, because if you leave them on for one reason and not another, players will soon becoming up with the same excuse for leaving.
But once a player has paid for those chips I think they should be left on until they blind out.

2- Player registered (allready paid) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)
When we have a player registered and paid their chips are on the table from the start of the tournament paying all blinds and antes in turn. And again, if the player has paid up we just leave the stack there.

3- Player registered (still have to pay) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)
Our registration stays open for 1 hour after the tournament starts, any unpaid players who have pre registered( chips will be on the table from the start ) will have their chips removed from the tourney after this time.

4- Player registered (freeroll sponsorded tourney) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)
We use the same rule as #3

Hello,

About this difficult subject is there a "most common rule" for the moment (before finding one day a definitive rule) in those different cases:

1- Player leaving and declaring he will not come back: what about his chips? (imagine big stack must leave for familly problems: different TD opinions)

Chips are blinded off. The stack has been paid for and played.

2- Player registered (allready paid) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

Depends. Some tournaments blind any paid and unpaid stack off equally. Some tournaments replenish blinded off stacks for late registrants. Are they a late registrant?
Some tournaments will pull the chips out of play if the chips have never been played by the end of registration and refund the money to the player and adjust the prize pool.
It's your call as TD, just put it in writing.

3- Player registered (still have to pay) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

See above #2.

4- Player registered (freeroll sponsorded tourney) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

Same as #1.

1- Player leaving and declaring he will not come back: what about his chips? (imagine big stack must leave for familly problems: different TD opinions)

In our tournaments, we blind out the chips until gone, this actually happened on this past Monday Night, player had to leave for work, was pushing all-in, all-in, and hitting, finally declaring that she must leave, she finished in the money at 4th place.

2- Player registered (allready paid) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

Same as rule number 1, as the chips are paid for.

3- Player registered (still have to pay) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

We use the one hour rule, same as regular or re-buy tournaments, chips are blinded out, then removed after one hour.

4- Player registered (freeroll sponsorded tourney) but late: what about the stack and blinds? (nobody's sure he will arrive)

Same as rule number 1

The only exception to the above rules are when we have quarterly playoff tournaments that players qualify for, but have to pay an entrance fee, as most tournaments only have about 75% of players showing, all players chips are placed on the tables before the start, once play begins, the no-shows chips are removed A.S.A.P. so that all tables have as many LIVE players as possible.
Players have one hour to show up, and if they do, their chips are then put back into play.

TY gentlemen for your advices.
I realise my exemple #3 isn't really usual ...

Let's finish with a simple and natural exemple: here in France the Casinos & Poker rooms must follow some rules of the law like to have the same quantity of chips & money at any given moment (in fact more complicated but let stay simple) so:

If they create a tourney that accept late registering (during one hour for exemple), any player arriving and paying the buy-in late (let's say after 45 minutes for exemple) will receive A FULL STACK (no blinded off)! What do you think about that? Acceptable or not?

If that is the law of your gaming authority, it doesn't make any difference what we think.  You MUST follow what the law requires.  If that law isn't popular, then your recourse would be to get it changed through whatever process French law provides.

I know that in the US, some cardrooms allow full chips for late registrations and others do not.

Hope this helps.

I dont think its going to be that much of a problem, or much you can do about it for that matter.
Like Chet said, there are some card rooms that allow it and some that don't.

TY for the last advices.

They are usefull because if ALL the US card rooms where doing the opposite way (blinding the late registering stacks), we could start here a long but possible process to change the law (in fact to make it more souple)!

Because you tell me that SOME (50%?) do like us ... it's OK!
