Just curious as to when everyone else is drawing the line in the sand as to when a player has to say their intentions when tossing out a chip.

While not by TDA Rule ... around here the social gaming clubs use a house rule of: "A single silent chip is always a call."  This is true whether it is a smaller or larger chip when facing a bet.  Of course, when not facing a bet (post-flop), the single chip is a min-bet if smaller than the BB or a full-chip bet when larger than the BB.

I was more interested in the aspect of timing.  Do you allow the player to say Raise:
While the chip is airborne ? 
As the chip hits the felt ?
Before the chip hits the felt ?

Or, like me, must the player say Raise before the chip leaves the player's hand.

My vote was for it being close to when the chip hits the felt. The point of the rule (I think) is to prevent a player from making his decision based on the reaction of other players. If it's close (and I mean real close... less than a second) to the time when the chip hit the felt, the verbal declaration should hold. It's not enough time for a player to have a reaction, much less to decipher the reaction. If a case can be made that elite players (or those who are really good at reading faces) could, in fact, read the reaction of other players in that short time, then I would change my vote to the chip hitting the felt.

PS I am assuming that when you say "close" you are referring to after the chip has hit the felt.

I would say as long it is close...  if sliding the chip, before it leaves their hand...

This is the way we do it.

Before it hits the felt, but if it's close, tie goes to the player.
