Dealer pushes pot to "winner"> he mucks> another player is found. How to handle?

What should happen when at showdown (or otherwise when the dealer thinks no competitors remain): a dealer pushes the pot to a player > Player releases his cards > cards are mucked irretrievably > it's discovered another player still has a hand. This topic is subject of following thread:
