Player announces wrong hand, dealer concurs, opponent mucks
« on: January 27, 2014, 01:02:30 PM »
Showdown between 2 players, board shows K J 9 8 6, no flush, the pot is not huge

Player A announces "straight" and turns over 10 4

Dealer concurs, player B shrugs and mucks

Dealer is awarding the pot when another player at the table applies Rule 2 (player's responsibility to speak up when a mistake is occurring)

Of course there wasn't a straight.

Floor is called ...  What do you feel should happen next?

Angle? Retrievable hand? Penalty? Other?

Ultimately, Player A will win this pot unless Player B's cards didn't make it all the way to the muck pile.  We have no way of knowing if Player B had a better hand or not.  If you think it was deliberate, you need to penalize Player A.

12:   Declarations. Cards Speak at Showdown
Cards speak to determine the winner. Verbal declarations of hand value are not binding at showdown. However, deliberately miscalling a hand may be penalized. Any player, in the hand or not, should speak up if he thinks a mistake is being made in the reading of hands.

I also would retrieve B's hand IF it is clearly identifiable and retrievable.

If B's hand is in the muck, A will win the pot and will receive at least a warning - a penalty if there is any history with this player.

I also find it useful to point out at least in more casual games that the B could have protected himself by tabling his hand. He gives up some information, but he gains the protection that his hand cannot be killed if it is a winner - which would have benefited him in this situation.

I agree with Tristan and Ken. Is it any different if Player A announces a straight but does not show his miscalled hand before Player B mucks?

Ken,

Could you clarify!

You say you would retrieve Player B's hand if clearly identifiable and retrievable, but then you say that player A will win if Player B's hand is in the muck.

Do you mean if in the muck and not retrievable?

Thanks,
Steven

Hi Steven:

Yes, when I mean in the muck, I mean mixed in the with mucked cards so that the hand is not 100% clearly identifiable and retrievable.

Ken +1 although I don't think I'm retrieving any cards from anywhere.

Steven, when you say the dealer "Concurs", do you mean the dealer sees the tabled hand and repeats "Straight!" ??

Heads up in a cash I prefer the dealer to remain quiet and let the cards speak. Just me.
