Hit-and-Run
« on: April 16, 2011, 08:41:34 PM »
I know this is stupid but I had a player tonight ask if we had a rule against players who Hit-and-Run. I can't think of a card room I've ever been in or worked in that had any such rules. I told him we were no different. It's too tough to decipher when a Hit-and-Run is happening. How do I know that this person wasn't planning on leaving after this hand anyway? Or that they just had a phone call and had to leave? Even though I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, has anyone come across a card room that had a Hit-and-Run policy? I can't imagine what it would be. After winning a hand you must play one more round. You may not cash out for more than 5 times the table maximum. I mean, what the heck!?

The only place I have seen anything like this was at an charity event run by Rockford Charitable Games.  They had, and may likely still have, a rule that you cannot cashout more than X (I don't remember if it was twice or some other amount) times your buy-in.  However, most players got around that by selling chips to other players until they got down to the allowable amount.

As far as a straight hit and run rule, those kind of rules are usually found a your typical home game, not in commercial establishments or even bar games to my knowledge.

True story,
I guess this is as close to a hit and run as I've seen. About twelve years ago, while dealing a house game, 10/20 limit holdem. One of the regular players was late arriving, so he waited for a seat to open. There were a couple of guys ahead of him on the list so he just hung around and waited. After about two hours he finally got his seat. He sat down, won the first pot that he was in, counted his $430 profit and went home. It wasn't the biggest win, by a long shot, but the same bunch of guys still play together at the local casino and they will never forget that one.
Spence, I don't know of any rule like that, even in a house game. I can understand how players would frown on that and I don't know if you would get invited back to that game but, I've never heard of a timeframe being enforced, not even in a house game. Consider the poor guy that "busts" out in his first hand. Players don't complain then, do they?

Good point Nick. Nobody ever remembers the guy who went broke. Unless you're the one counting his chips ;)

the majority of UK casinos/cash games enforce a 'notice' period where a player who is up (any amount) must inform the dealer/table of their intent to leave the game, the notice period is usually 15 minutes, during which time they must post blinds normally until their time is served.

Casino I play at if you leave your seat you cannot return for an hour and any time you return during that day you must buy back in for the amount you took off the table, I guess this keeps players from going south and taking chips out of play. If you hit and run and don't come back the chips are gone but if you come back you must buy back in for the amount you left with?

I know of no casino/card room that has such a rule.  I have seen a few minor hit and runs and nobody truly complains,  they try and make the guy feel a little guilty, but nothing serious.  Most rooms have the same buy in rule that ecfd200 stated, if you come back in an hour you have to buy for the same stack you left with.
