New Blind Structure
« on: March 16, 2011, 05:39:47 PM »
Looking for a little help here, suggestions or criticism.
Planning on running this as a regular T5000 w/o the antes for a regular game & as a T10000 deep stack with antes. No rebuys or addons. Usually between 14-24 players.
If I run as a T4000 with rebuys and an addon, will this go on too long?

Hi Head. Here's my comments FWTW:
1) Regarding the total time for this event. The end is usually near when you're down to 2 or 3 players and the average stack has around 15 BB's. Especially if you're using sensible antes which you are,

A) SO... with 20 players, and a 5000 starting stack, that's 100,000 total tourney chips. Divide by 3 remaining players = average stack of 33,000, divide by 15 = a BB of $2000. SO, at the BB level of $2000 the end will be near... That occurs at your level 10 and you get there in about 4.5 hours. Is that about how much time you want it to last??

B) When you go to the 10000 deep stack, just double that, the end will be near when you're around BB 4,000, that's at level 12 around 5 hours 15 mins. Is that about right for you?

C) You ask if a 4000 starter with re-buys and add-on would run too long. Well, if you have the same starting 20 players, you can use the above to guesstimate. Let's say you allow a total of 6,000 in re-buy/add-ons. Then you're up to a 10000 per player average total stack. Use the 10k example above and you should still be over in a little past 5 hours.

BTW, you say you don't use antes for the 5000 starting stack but IMO that's a mistake. Not using antes allows rocks to hang onto just a few BB's for entire trips around the table... and in order to squeeze the field down you have to keep pushing the blinds... and your blind raises here IMO are a bit aggressive for comfort.  More on that in a sec. SO, again I'd recommend using your ante structure for all the games, it's just a good way to incentivize the very short stacks and rocks while taking pressure off the average player by not pushing the blinds quite as aggressively as you would if you didn't have an ante.

back to your blind raises. Note that from level 3 to 4 it's a 33% hike (75 to 100), then 50% hike from 100 to 150, then back to 33 for 150 to 300, then back to 50% from 200 to 300.  Personally I don't like 50% hikes, they are just too stark to be comfortable and play your best game... I'd definitely advise not ratcheting them up more than 25 to 30% per level even for an aggressive tournament. If you have to close the tourney by a certain time, then just start out with a smaller starting stack. At $50 initial BB, you're at 100x the first blind, you could push that bac to 3000 and still be at 60x the BB, then raise the levels more slowly.

If you reply back with how long you want your total tourney to run this can be calculated more accurately. That's an important missing piece of info: how LONG do you want the tournament to last ?

Looking at the five hour mark, but most don't object to going seven once in a while.

Thanks for the calculations, I usually use BB at 4-10% of the total chips in play.

Two new levels?

Small Blind   Big Blind   Ante   Minutes in Level
1   $25   $50   $0   20
2   $50   $100   $0   20
3   $75   $150   $0   20
     $100   $200   $0    20
4   $100   $200   $25   20
     $125   $250   $25   20
5   $150   $300   $25   20
6   $200   $400   $50   20
7   $300   $600   $75   20

My 5k structure is used pretty widely nowadays and proves to be robust but popular, for pub games or larger.  For the pub games levels are 15 minutes, which gets it finished around the 4 hour mark.  For larger events with 10k I usually goto 20 minute levels, we ALWAYS use antes, I believe them to be an integral part of ANY SNG, STT or MTT, Antes in my opinion, smooth out the whole game, and allow for the better players to prevail moreoften.

25/50
50/100
100/200
10m break
150/300/a25
200/400/a50
300/600/a75
10m break CR 25's
400/800/a100
600/1200/a100
800/1600/a200
1000/2000/a200
1500/3000/a300
5min break if needed CR 100's
2000/4000/a500
3000/6000/a500
4000/8000/a1000
6000/12000/a1000
8000/16000/a2000
10000/20000/a2000

It does keep the levels fairly smooth, with no big jumps, and gives even pub poker players a decent enough structure without it ending in a crapshoot!

Regards
Stu
