blind structuring
« on: January 11, 2011, 05:11:20 AM »
Hi,

I estimate a maximum of 200 players and no matter how many of them register I would make it a two day event with the final table on the third day.

main event       stack: 20.000 chips

LEVEL   SMALL BLIND   BIG BLIND   ANTE   TIME(min)

1   25   50      40
2   50   100      40
3   75   150      40
BREAK            15
4   100   200      40
5   150   300      40
6   150   300   25   40
BREAK            60
7   200   400   50   40
8   300   600   75   40
9   400   800   100   40
CHIP RACE 25            15
10   500   1000   100   40
11   600   1200   100   40
12   800   1600   200   40
END OF DAY 1
13   1000   2000   200   50
14   1500   3000   300   50
15   2000   4000   400   50
CHIP RACE 100            25
16   3000   6000   500   50
17   4000   8000   500   50
18   5000   10000   1000   50
BREAK            60
19   6000   12000   1000   50
20   8000   16000   1000   50
21   10000   20000   2000   50
BREAK            25
22   15000   30000   3000   50
23   20000   40000   4000   50
24   30000   60000   6000   50
BREAK            60
25   40000   80000   8000   50
26   50000   100000   10000   50
27   60000   120000   12000   50
BREAK            25
28   80000   160000   16000   60

It is nothing revolutionary, but I would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Mega. I'd suggest the following changes:
1: Starting out at 25-50 is a bit low for a 20,000 starting stack if you're just doing a 2-day event, IMO. That's starting stack=400 times the BB... I'd start out w/ higher blinds.
2: Some of your blind raising is a bit heavy, for example, when you raise from 400 to 600 (50% increase) and from 2k to 3k (50% incr) to 4k (33% incr) to 6k (50% incr again), then from 20k to 30k and 40k to 60k. Those are uncomfortably high-percentage blind increments for a classy event, I'd suggest making them a little less steep, never exceeding 25% or so increase per increment is alot more comfortable for players to play their best poker without feeling too much blind pressure
3: Introducing an ante at level 6 is a bit soon and a 25 ante given 20,000 starting stacks is just nothing. I'd start the antes a bit later, say when the BB hits 800 or 1000, and start the antes at 100 at that time. I DO like your ante % which you're keeping around plus or minus 10% of your BB, that's good, just start it a bit later at a higher BB level.
4: Your 40 to 50 time increment is fine. If you're tight for time you could start your 50's a bit later (say at level 15). You could also even do 35's to start for a few rounds, then 40's, then 45's, then 50's. Anything so that you don't have to push the blinds so much as I mentioned in item #2.
SO, with the above in mind, I'd suggest something more along these lines, given a 20k starting stack:
50-100. The average stack is 200 times the BB, that's very comfortable.
75-150.
100-200. After this, try to limit each increment to plus or minus 25% ... 125/250, 150/300, 200/400 (I know that's 33%), 250/500, 300/600, 350/700, 400/800, 500/1000 (Start Antes @100) 600/1200, 800/1600, 1000/2000, 1200/2400, 1500/3000, 2000/4000 (a 33% jump!), 2500/5000, 3000/6000 and so on....        Hope this helps, let us know what structure you finally come up with.

Mega: I just now read that you intend to have 200 players, so with this information, you can take the analysis to an important next step. You can draft up your blinds AS THOUGH you will have a full 200 turnout. Then, if the turnout isn't quite that high, you can always relax your blind structure a bit.
This way, assuming you have the full 200 turnout, you can have a blind structure that you know will get you to a final table by the end of Day 2, so that you can have your final table on Day 3. SO, let's use your initial figures:

200 Players X  20,000 starting stack = 4,000,000 Total Tournament Chips
Final Table = 4,000,000 Total Chips divided by 9 players = 444,444 average stack.

NOW, when player's stacks start reaching 10 or 15 times the big blind, presuming you have an ante, players are going to start pushing all-in, that's the key.  SO, I would want to have a blind level somewhere around 444,444 / 15  towards the end of Day 2.   That would be 15,000 / 30,000 with, say, a 3,000 ante would almost certainly get you to your final 9 players pretty quick. That MIGHT be a bit tough on your players so, let's say you wanted to finsih play by 12 midnight on Day 2....  You might do your final blind levels something like:
7pm 7000 / 14000 (1000 ante); 750pm 8000 / 16000 (2000 ante); 840pm  10000 / 20000 (2000 ante);  930pm 12000 / 24000 (2000 ante); 1020pm 15000 / 30000 (3000 ante). You're almost certain to have your final table somewhere between 840 and 1020, but just in case you could publish remaining blinds at 1110pm 17000 / 34000 (3000 ante), and 1200am 20000 / 40000 (4000 ante).   THEN, to fill in the rest of your blind structure, just start out at 50 / 100 at the beginning of Day 1 and fill them in so that you hit 7000 / 14000 by 7pm on Day 2! On the day of the tournament, if you have a substantially smaller turnout, then you can just publish an amended schedule. For example, if you get 100 instead of 200, then just cut the blinds in half and you'll be at the same multiples of the average chip stack all the way through.
