Great thread, I have been hearing more about the button ante and was a little confused about it, definitely a topic that is bringing a lot of questions...  and probably a topic that will bring new recommendations in the next TDA update.

I knew I'd get your attention. ;D So...what's your take?

I have to agree with you and Dave. I have never heard of button antes until this thread, but I don't like the idea in general. It's solving a problem that doesn't exist and just creates too many questions, such as those posed in this thread. You are already forcing bets on two players (SB and BB). Now the button has a good amount of chips in the pot pre-deal AND has to call the BB (or raised BB) just to stay in. Changes the essence of hold 'em.

Started seeing it on the new poker after dark, and hear it was starting to be used in Asia and some casino in the US as well.

Just to clarify: in events where one player pays all antes, far more often than not you're going to see the BB putting out the entire table ante, not the button. Button ante has problems such as dead button, etc. The BB is the only "must play" seat, and does not have the BB twice. ARIA using it fairly extensively, definitely a coming trend.

By the 2019 TDA Summit there will be alot more global experience with it and will likely be subject of discussion, possibly for a TDA Recommended Procedure for houses that choose to use it.

In all of our "Single Ante" tournaments, we have the Big Blind post the Ante, and we use the following verbiage:

Ante is to be posted by the Big Blind, is a single Ante, and in an all-in situation,
the Big Blind is to be considered as having been posted first

If anyone is interested in our structure or flyers, just email me and I'll send one over.
