Paid Player not Playing
« on: April 21, 2017, 10:33:31 AM »
OK, here's a question that might not have any real world examples, but I'm curious how it would be handled. Let's say a player wants to buy in to a tournament but not be present to play. They understand the implications. Do you put their chip stack in play and blind them out throughout the tournament or do you eliminate them at the start of the tournament? I know you would probably never see this in a tournament in real life, but it happened in my home game last night (we follow TDA rules). Since my home game is smaller than most legit tournaments and players deal hands, it would have been a hassle for the person one to the right of the absent player since they'd have to deal twice every circuit but they also had the benefit of having an absent player directly after them.

Yes, I know this is highly unusual... in this situation, the player was a long time participant who recently moved to Texas but wanted to boost up the prize pool in honor of 4/20.

Paying but with no intention of showing up? That is a lot different than a player who promises to pay the buy-in, and can be trusted to do so even if they are a no-show.

It sounds like your friend merely wants to bump up the prize pool. So why not do just that? It's no different than a casino tournament where there is a missed guarantee - the prize pool is augmented from a secondary source, without any additional chip stacks in play.

Hi Greg,

Next time I'd just distribute the extra chips to the players at the table. Your right about never experiencing that before. ???

Hello folks,

In tournaments I usually deal cards, we use full stack option.
The player gets his/her pile of chips when arriving at the table and one ID is verified.
If the player does not show up after late registration period is over, the stack is put in play and blinded out.

If the player show up before late registration is over he could ask for a refund.

In this case, I'd tell the friend thanks and tell him that the $$ are going straight to the prize pool and will not be an entry.

Wouldn't you agree that putting his money into the prize pool is similar to my suggestion to distribute his buy in equally among all players, in the form of extra chips?

Yes, it is similar.  Where does the odd chip go?   ;)

Good point.

If you're bent on putting the chips in play, you can devise a new rule: that stack doesn't get cards, nor is ever a blind, but adds 1BB to every pot. It's goofy, but you can get a little goofy in a home game if you want.

Odd chip? If there are odd chips they can be added to each pot one at a time until they are dispersed. Anyway, I see no reason to refuse your absent friend (or anyone for that matter) from adding to your prize money. ;D

Why would you add the chips in play ?

Simply add the money to the prize pool.

WSOP has a NO SHOW rule, but they also remove the buy in from the prize pool.  Could we state something like after a set number of levels, chips will be removed if staff is certain the person will not show and leave the buy in in the prize pool as per the players wishes?

Ralph,

Why not? Don't you like more chips when you play? Either way is certainly better than blinding off the chips!

Ask your players what they'd rather do.

Motobaka72...not sure that change would be necessary, but it probably wouldn't hurt. Let's not forget, Gregg's original post was about a home game. Casino rules would be less flexible.

I really struggle with this hypothetical, who would be Playing but with no intention of showing up?  The only case I could see would be a poker series where points are involved?  If it is the case then I would go with adding the money to the pool and not putting the chips in play.  If we put the chips in play, then I would leave them until the predetermined time when all no show stacks are removed from the tables.

That's a good point I should have included in my original post. This case is a league where points are involved. But, judging from all the replies, I see that there is no TDA rule that has any bearing on the case so it's just up to the TD to decide how to handle it.
