Exposed hand
« on: June 12, 2014, 06:47:56 PM »
Hey guys
Just want to confirm the exposed hand rule. (58)

Three players in the hand on the river in a tournment.  Player 1 pushed all in, player 2 ( has 1 covered)  pushes allin then tables both his cards.  There is still another player left to act who has both players covered.  I would assume by the TDA rule 58, that players 2 hand would not be dead,  he may be assigned a penalty( on the next hand) but his cards would still play.

Would it change if there were more then one player left to act, or on the turn?

Thanks in advance

Hello English,

You are correct about Player 2's hand being live. A penalty should be enforced, however, he must win the pot. Circumstances can call for different penalties. A good example is if a player intentionally shows cards, as opposed to a player not realising there are other players yet to act.

It is a violation of proper etiquette but (in my opinion), a player in for all bets that tables his hand, should never have his hand ruled dead.

Thanks Nick

I'm just curious, assuming you know 100% that a player makes a mistake and tables their hand, is there a place where you would kill it?  What happens if he tables it on the flop and he still has chips behind as do other players?

In my example above, I was player 2 and after a brief debate, my hand was ruled live.  I'm just curious where the line gets drawn.

English,

I want you to know that what I wrote is how I would handle the described situation. If you look back on some of the past questions on this Forum that pertain, you will find there are others who just might kill the premature exposed hand. As for me, other than a stern warning for a repeat offender, I see no way to kill that hand. However, I have no objection to disqualifying any player who insists on bending any rule.

Ok thanks for the information.  The question came up at one of our games after I tabled my hand by accident.  Some pushed the point any exposed hand is dead with action pending.

I would never rule a mistakenly exposed hand dead and I can't think of too many situations in which I would kill the hand if it was intentionally exposed.

I find it hard to believe hands would be ruled dead either. The question didn't come up at a casino, but I was the only one pointing out a hand doesn't get ruled dead there.  Had guys claim a casino would rule it dead.

Not that it is right, but I know the only remaining poker room in Dubuque, IA does not allow hands to be exposed and will immediately rule the hand dead.  Tried to explain that this policy goes against the grain, but my points fell upon deaf ears.  Don't play there much anyway and probably less in the future.

Killing hands is old school.  The TD should always be able to find an appropriate warning/penalty depending on the offender's motive for exposing cards and how exposing the cards may have impacted the normal course of the hand.
