Show one show all - Privilege or process

A very quick question! If a player shows cards to another player after a hands conclusion, should the hand be automatically tabled by the dealer; or should it only be turned on request?

I guess that would depend on whether the player's are in for all bets. Player A bets, Player B calls and Player C folds and shows his hand to his neighbor (in or out). I don't think he has to show anyone else. In fact, there's not much you can do in a cash game, to force any player to show his hand.
