"No behind"
« on: March 17, 2014, 02:21:22 PM »
I was wondering how you all handle the "no behind" situation during various or all tournament situations! That is, do you enforce it no matter what if it prolongs, do you wait for player objection, do you let it go for a while, do you always enforce it at final table or late in the tournament, do you give "seemingly passive" onlookers a break? Those are just examples!

Just asking! I know this may be a situational question and may vary from venue to venue or depend on the "levity" of the game! But I was mainly wondering if the TD should step in first or wait until a player plays the "bad guy" and objects!

Thanks!

I generally will allow them to sit in a chair behind their person.  If I see them wandering around the table or tables and reporting back, I'll have them leave the area.  If any tournament player objects to them sitting there I will also have them leave the area.

Steven,

Forgive me for not being familiar with your subject "no behind." I think I have an idea from Tristan's reply. Allowing spectators to sit behind player's has always been more accepted in casino live games but tournament poker might be more of a problem. That's just my opinion. However, I know there are issues with spectator's seated in the "peanut gallery." I remember during the 2011 Summit, Barry Greenstein voiced his displeasure with the close proximity of spectators. I have to agree. The size of the tournament and other factors could always be considered but for WSOP events, I think the spectators should be in a "sound-proof" booth.

In all tournaments I have run and rooms I have worked in we have had the rule that no spectators are permitted on tournament tables.  Players must stay at least a "table length" away, that is: the distance to the next closest empty table.

Reasons?
A) Players are generally under more pressure in a tournament environment, and I don't want any distractions.
B) If I'm at a live table and don't like that a player is spectating, I can always ask to move tables or even leave the game; I don't have that option on a tournament table.
C) If I'm the floor, I am more involved in the tournament tables, i.e. I may have to count down all-ins, move players to balance tables, break games, observe multiple side pots for accuracy, etc. I don't want any unneccesary obstacles (the spectating players) in my way.
